Credit Card Insurance in Switzerland 2026 – Is it worth it?

Most credit cards are offering some form of insurance. But most people do not know about these credit card insurances and are not using them when they could. On the other hand, some people are using credit card insurance as a criterion to choose a credit card.
It is therefore important to know about these credit card insurances. In this article, we will see exactly what is covered by these policies and in exactly what conditions.
How does credit card insurance work?
In Switzerland, we have many types of insurance. Some insurance is mandatory, like health insurance, while others are optional, like building insurance. In general, you pay for insurance, and then you get the benefits for the entire period of your contract.
However, Swiss credit card insurance is slightly different. In general, you will only get the benefits for something you have paid for with the credit card itself. For instance, if you get a best price guarantee with your credit card, you will only be able to claim it on things you have bought with this credit card.
This limitation can sometimes be very inconvenient. Indeed, credit cards are not always the best way to pay for something. When you are buying something outside of Switzerland, using a debit card is often the best card strategy because you will save on foreign exchange fees. So, by doing so, you will also have to choose between insurance and fees.
When you search for credit cards, you typically see gold, silver, and platinum names. These are the tiers of credit cards. And generally, the thing that changes the most between the tiers is credit card insurance. Usually, a free card has almost no credit card insurance, but as you move up in the tiers, you will get more and more insurance. And of course, you will pay more in yearly fees for each tier.
It is also important to note that Visa and Mastercard themselves do not provide any insurance. The insurance is arranged by the company issuing the card. Visa and Mastercard are only providing the payment network.
Like any other insurance, there is typically a deductible that you will have to pay yourself. And there are significant limits on each benefit. There are limits per event and per year. Furthermore, each benefit has different conditions.
We can now delve into the different credit card insurance benefits that we can get.
Travel credit card insurance benefits
The most used credit card insurance is for travel. When you buy a trip with your credit card, you will generally get some insurance benefits for that trip.
It is essential for travel insurance that you purchase the entire trip with the credit card. You will not get any insurance if you have not done so. And it is important to purchase the entire trip with the same credit card. Some insurance policies have strict rules indicating that a certain percentage (sometimes even 100%) of the trip must be paid with the credit card. it means that if you want insurance coverage, you will need to pay for the travel tickets and the stay with your credit card. And if you have a rental card, use the same insurance.
The most useful travel credit card insurance is likely trip cancellation insurance. This insurance will reimburse your trip (up to a maximum) in case you cannot go on your trip. This could be because of you (an accident or illness), the airline (e.g., bankruptcy or strike), or something at the destination (e.g., epidemic or war).
Another useful travel credit card insurance is trip interruption insurance. It is very similar to the trip cancellation insurance, but it is useful when the trip is interrupted after you leave rather than before you leave. Again, this could be because of many factors (not all factors are insured by all insurance providers).
Occasionally, you also get trip delay insurance. For instance, if your flight is delayed and you have to pay for another night in a hotel, for instance. This sometimes covers cases where the airline itself would not reimburse you, for instance because of weather.
If you rent a car with your credit card, you may get rental car collision insurance. This insurance covers the deductible of the mandatory car collision insurance from rental car companies.
One useful insurance is luggage insurance. It can cover both luggage theft and delay. For delays, be careful that insurance generally needs the delay to be a certain length. For instance, you could only get benefits if it is more than 6 hours late.
With premium credit cards, you will also get emergency medical insurance. This covers the cost of medical care that is not covered by your Swiss health insurance. This can be useful if you only have mandatory health insurance, which may not cover the insane health costs in some countries like the United States.
In case of an emergency, you could also get some search and rescue insurance. Again, this will cover the costs that will not be covered by other Swiss health insurance.
Finally, some credit cards also include death and disability insurance. In this case, the insurance will pay if you die or get disabled during a trip paid for by the credit card.
As you can see from this list, there are really many possible benefits from credit card insurance when you buy your entire trip with a credit card. It is important to know whether you are covered or not to avoid double coverage. For instance, many airlines include extra cancellation insurance, which is useless if you are already covered by your credit card. But if you have complementary travel insurance, you may also not need any of these.
Shopping credit card insurance benefits
Many credit cards also have insurance for shopping. This means that if you buy something with the credit card, you can get additional benefits.
The main credit card insurance benefit is the purchase and shipping protection. If you buy something with your credit card, you will generally get extra insurance for the shipping. So, if the object is damaged or stolen before it reaches you and you cannot claim it from the merchant, the credit card company may reimburse you up to 5000 CHF (in the best case). This protection can also apply after you have received the item for a short period of time (up to 90 days in some cases, usually shorter).
Another interesting benefit is the price protection insurance. If you buy something with your credit card and then find the same product at another merchant but at a lower price, the credit card will reimburse you the difference. In most cases, the period during which you can claim the benefit is typically short (often 14 days).
A more niche benefit is the guaranteed returns insurance. If you buy something and want to return it but the merchant does not accept returns, you can return it to the insurance, and they will reimburse you up to a given amount.
Finally, some credit cards also offer extended warranty insurance. If you have bought something with your credit card, you may get an extra year of warranty. The exact conditions vary a lot by provider, but you can generally get an extra year of warranty. Sometimes, the card doubles the warranty period. Or, the insurance company adds a year if the warranty is five years, so this can be very different from one insurer to another.
Overall, if you are shopping a lot with a credit card, these benefits can be interesting.
Other credit card insurance benefits
Finally, we can also cover a few other niche benefits that some credit cards provide.
Some credit cards include some form of legal insurance or even cybersecurity insurance. I am not aware of any card that provides full legal insurance. These cards provide a form of legal insurance for shopping or travel when the payment was done with the card. This insurance will not replace legal protection insurance, but this can be useful if you do not have a legal insurance policy. This is only for paid cards.
Many Gold and Platinum cards have insurance for lost keys. This will cover you if you have lost your keys and need the assistance of a locksmith or a rental car to go fetch other keys.
Free credit card insurance benefits
A great Swiss credit card with excellent cashback (up to 1%!), very flexible, and with a good mobile application.
- No yearly fee
- 1% cashback in three shops
So far, we have seen the full spectrum of all credit card insurance benefits. But not all credit cards offer all these benefits. In fact, only paid cards have all the benefits. In the case of travel insurance, you will even need a platinum card to get the whole coverage.
We can take the example of the Certo One card (our review), the card that we use:
- You get purchase protection (theft and damage) of up to 2000 CHF per event and per year (only products worth 50 CHF or more are covered).
- You get a best-price guarantee for up to 3000 CHF per year (only applies if the difference is at least 30 CHF and the price of products is at least 50 CHF).
- You get travel insurance for up to 100,000 CHF. This covers mostly search and rescue and some interruption costs.
The Migros Cumulus credit card (our review) has about the same coverage, but with lower amounts. For instance, they only have 60’000 CHF of travel insurance. The Supercard credit card has good travel insurance but no shopping insurance. On the other hand, it has a death insurance abroad.
The Poinz and Cashback cards only have 1000 CHF guaranteed returns insurance, nothing else.
Of course, this is only a preview. There are many conditions to claim these benefits; you will have to read the small print of these conditions to see exactly what applies.
Overall, we can see that free credit cards are much more limited. However, it is good to see that our favorite credit card has very decent credit card insurance.

Debit card insurance
Until now, we have talked about credit cards, but what about debit cards? Historically, debit cards did not have any insurance, but this is starting to change. But in general, free debit cards will rarely have any insurance.
Several of the cantonal banks now have debit card insurance. The most interesting example is the Basler Kantonalbank, which has some travel insurance even though the account is free. Other paid accounts from Lucerner Kantonalbank and Glarner Kantonalbank for instance, also have some insurance. It is not always easy to find information about these benefits.
Digital banks also have some debit card insurance:
- Neon has multiple tiers, which can add a lot of insurance benefits to their debit cards.
- Swissquote also has one paid option for travel insurance (with their Elite tier).
It is interesting that debit cards are also starting to have insurance benefits. However, in most cases, they do not have as many benefits as credit card insurance. But if you can get them for free, it is good to use.
How to take advantage of credit card insurance?
Credit cards have many insurance benefits. There are a few rules of thumb to take advantage of these benefits.
- You need to make sure to read the conditions of these insurance benefits. If you do not know exactly what it covers, you will not know how to use it.
- If you have good credit card insurance, you can often avoid taking out other extra insurance like extended warranties on online shopping or cancellation insurance when booking a trip online.
- Remember that credit card insurance only applies to things you have purchased with your credit card.
- Always balance the costs of using the credit card (foreign exchange fees) and credit card insurance benefits.
Conclusion
Credit cards have many credit card insurance benefits. Even free credit cards can have some benefits. But these benefits vary a lot from one card to another. And paid credit cards usually have many more benefits than free cards. As a result, it is important to read and understand the conditions in detail.
If you are using a credit card a lot, these benefits can definitely be interesting. But it is critical to realize that several of these benefits could be covered another way as well. For instance, if you have complementary health insurance with global coverage, you will not need extra health coverage. And if you already have travel insurance with luggage insurance, you do not need extra coverage to cover your luggage.
Personally, we do not use our credit cards for travel since we favor our debit card to save on currency exchange fees. We do use our credit card for online shopping in Switzerland. So far, we have never used the insurance. I do not use credit card insurance as a criterion to use a credit card. I think that having a free card is better than having a paid card with more insurance that we are unlikely to use.

Thanks Baptiste.
Also adding that Neon’s reps where quite reactive and pleasant to deal with. My bad experience was exclusively referring to the insurance provider they have.
Thanks, that’s worth noting indeed!
A good option for travel insurance is the Radicant pre-paid card. I think it’s a unique deal without any ongoing costs.
Radicant has indeed a nice package for debit card insurance. Have you used it yourself?
I’ve made my research and since being neon’s customer already – I opted for their travel insurance with one of the card’s paid tier.
Coverage terms are better than of Swiss Card for example, but neon card has to be used, which is still sort of must have to save on commission and rate exchange fees.
Thanks for sharing, Roman.
Are you happy with the insurance coverage of Neon?
Hi Roman, I have had Neon Metal for a few years, and out of several unfortunate events regarding the travel/shopping insurance, only one was covered by them. They have ERV as the insurance provider and my experience with ERV was very unpleasant since they arbitrarily decide how to qualify an event to fall under their T&Cs or not. I felt misled by them and ended up not being covered for obvious cases.
On a separate note, Baptiste, it would also be interesting to see here the comparison of the Supercard insurance. Thanks
Thanks for sharing, Henrik!
I’ll take a note about the insurance for the Supercard (already added it to the comparison tool).
