WIR Bank vs Migros Bank

(Disclosure: Some of the links below may be affiliate links)

We have used Migros Bank for many years as our main bank account. Recently, we have switched to Bank WIR Bankpaket top as our main banking package. Both are great banks, but there are some differences.

In this comparison article of Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank, I compare these two banks in depth. By the end of the article, you will know which one you should choose for your own primary bank account.

Bank WIR Bankpaket top

Bank WIR Bankpaket top is a banking package from WIR Bank. The Bank WIR (or WIR for short) is a well-established bank, dating from 1934. It got its banking license in 1936. Until recently they were mostly known as a bank for small and medium companies and for having their own currency (the WIR).

In 2025, they introduced their Bank WIR Bankpaket top package and became very interesting for private customers as well. It is also worth noting that they are behind the very successful VIAC 3a third pillar.

The bank is not among the biggest banks, but it still manages more than six billion CHF in assets. Also, it has been profitable for many years. This is a good sign for the future.

In 2026, we switched to Bank WIR Bankpaket top as our main bank account.

For all the details, you can read our Bank WIR Bankpaket top Review.

Migros Bank

Migros Bank is the banking service of the Migros group. The bank was founded in 1957.

One thing worth noting is that Migros Bank eliminated bonuses for employees in 2019. This is great because bonuses create conflicts of interest and short-term thinking.

Migros Bank is a large financial institution. In 2026, they are managing more than 50 billion CHF in assets. Being a part of the massive Migros group also gives it financial stability and credibility.

We have used Migros Bank as our main joint bank account for about six years.

Banking features

Draw

We start by comparing the banking features of Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank.

Both banks are quite similar in terms of standard features:

  • Receive and send money
  • Pay bills (QR bills or manual bills)
  • View the balance and information about your accounts
  • View transactions on your account.
  • Pay e-bills.

On the e-bills front, Bank WIR has a slight advantage. They have integrated e-bills directly into the main app, and they do not require you to jump to the e-bill online portal. This is a smoother experience that saves you a little time.

Both bank accounts only let you hold CHF by default. You can open additional accounts, but neither bank offers a multi-currency account.

Migros Bank offers a Visa debit card, while Bank WIR offers a Mastercard debit card. In practice, in Switzerland, this should make no difference.

Both banks have their own TWINT app. So, they have full support for TWINT, without needing to go through the prepaid or UBS TWINT apps like some digital banks require.

Both banks are also available in the three national languages: French, German, and Italian.

Interestingly, both banks provide access to e-banking on computers. For some people (including me), this is important. Both solutions work well, but they both have the same issue. They both require the app on the smartphone. I would have preferred a true 2FA solution instead of having to be forced to use their app. But this is still much better than no e-banking.

Finally, both banks offer joint accounts.

Overall, both banks are really full-featured. There is no significant advantage to either solution.

Banking fees

Winner: WIR Bank

Fees are essential with a bank account. If two bank accounts have similar features, we should aim for the cheaper of the two bank accounts. So, let’s compare the fees of Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank.

Both Bank WIR Bankpaket top and Migros Bank accounts are free. There is no fee to open the account, and you will receive both cards for free in each case. All the basic standard features are free in both cases as well.

Doing a SEPA transfer costs 0.30 CHF with Migros Bank and is free with Bank WIR Bankpaket top.

It is also important to look at the costs of withdrawals.

  • With Bank WIR Bankpaket top, we have 24 free withdrawals per year worldwide at any ATM.
    • Any further withdrawals cost 2 CHF.
  • With Migros Bank, all withdrawals at Migros Bank and Migros shops are free.
    • Any other withdrawal in CHF in Switzerland will cost 2 CHF
    • Any other withdrawal in EUR in Switzerland will cost 4 CHF
    • Any withdrawal abroad will cost 5 CHF

Using the card abroad will cost about a 2.5% fee on the currency exchange surcharge with Migros Bank. Bank WIR Bankpaket top has the distinct advantage of offering the interbank exchange (no surcharge, even on weekends).

Overall, this is a significant advantage for Bank WIR Bankpaket top. With Migros Bank, you would have to use a secondary card to avoid these fees abroad. With Bank WIR Bankpaket top, you only need a single account.

Safety

Draw

We should also compare the safety of both banks if we want to deposit money with them.

Both banks are fully licensed banks. It means that our money is protected by the Swiss deposit insurance. So, in case of bankruptcy, up to 100,000 CHF of our cash would be protected. This is the default protection in Switzerland.

Both banks are profitable, which is a great indicator of longevity. And they have both been around for a very long time.

The technical security of both banks appears to be sound. They are not sharing many things about what they do here, but I have not found any sign of a breach in either bank.

So, from a safety point of view, both banks appear to be equally safe.

Limits

Draw

If you want to use a bank account as your main account, limits are essential. In most cases, this is not that important, but there are cases when you need to transfer large amounts of money (buying a house or a car), and you do not want your bank to block this.

Both Migros Bank and Bank WIR are traditional banks. Such banks usually do not have any limits on transactions. This is the case for both of them.

With the debit card of Migros Bank, you have a default limit of 2,000 CHF per day and 10,000 CHF per month. But you can increase these limits to 10,000 CHF per day and 50,000 CHF per month.

With the debit card of WIR Bank, there is a default daily limit of 3,000 CHF and a 15,000 CHF monthly limit. These can be adjusted up to a 15,000 CHF daily limit and a 20,000 CHF monthly limit in e-banking.

Overall, the limits are pretty similar. There is no limit for either checking account. Bank WIR has a higher maximum daily limit, and Migros Bank has a higher monthly limit.

Reputation

Draw

Then, we should also look at the reputation of both banks.

Bank WIR is more discreet as a bank. Before they launched VIAC, they were little known among private customers since most of their customers were small companies. Now that they have a great banking package, they are gaining traction. They do have a good reputation overall.

Migros Bank is a much larger bank that is well known by people thanks to its large presence. The Migros group generally has a good reputation in Switzerland. Among its customers, its reputation took a minor hit when they launched the new apps, which were not done in an excellent way. But it has improved tremendously since.

Again, both banks are at the same level.

Conditions

Winner: Migros Bank

Finally, we should compare Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank for the conditions of the two accounts.

Migros Bank has no special condition for its account. If you can open a bank account in Switzerland, you can open a Migros Bank account.

However, to qualify for the Bank WIR Bankpaket top banking package, you must meet one of these conditions:

  1. Send at least 1500 CHF to this account monthly.
  2. Have at least 20,000 CHF in retirement funds with WIR (not VIAC 3a).
  3. Have a mortgage of at least 300,000 CHF with WIR.
  4. Buy a social share of WIR Bank.
    1. This condition does not apply to joint accounts because you cannot have joint ownership of a social share.

Migros Bank has an advantage since it has no conditions. The conditions of Bank WIR Bankpaket top are fine if you are looking for a primary account but not great for any other case.

Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank Summary

Winner: WIR Bank

With all this analysis done, we can draw some conclusions for Bank WIR Bankpaket top vs Migros Bank:

  • Both banks have similar features.
  • Both banks have e-banking access (but require a mobile app).
  • Bank WIR Bankpaket top is much cheaper to use abroad.
  • Both banks have been around for a long time.
  • Both banks offer the same safety.
  • Both banks offer similar limits.
  • Migros Bank has no conditions to keep the account.

Conclusion

Best primary bank account
Bank WIR Bankpaket Top
5.0

Bank WIR Bankpaket top is an excellent banking package without fees from a reputable bank.

Use our link to receive 50 CHF when you open an account.

Pros:
  • Interbank exchange rate
Open a new account Our Review
You need to deposit 250 CHF in the first 30 days to get the bonus on your account.

Both of these banks offer excellent value. They have the same set of features and are both very cheap. However, Bank WIR Bankpaket top has one major advantage over Migros Bank: you can use the card abroad and get no surcharge on currency conversions. This is a major advantage because you then do not need to keep multiple accounts.

The only downside of Bank WIR Bankpaket top is that they have some conditions. If you are using it as a primary account, this is not a deal-breaker because you would need to receive 1,500 CHF per month in your account, which is easy on a primary account. But as a secondary account, this is not ideal.

We had used Migros Bank for years before we switched to Bank WIR Bankpaket top a few months ago. So far we are quite happy with our new primary joint account.

What about you? Which do you prefer, Bank WIR Bankpaket top or Migros Bank?

  1. Hi Baptiste, great article! I have a quick question regarding your main account. I thought you were using Neon as your primary bank, as it was strongly recommended in your previous posts. Did you recently switch to Bank WIR yourself, or do you still consider Neon the best choice for everyday banking and expats?
