September 2025 – We moved in

In September 2025, we moved into our new house. The move went well, and the installation of the house progressed really well. We are now living in the new house comfortably. In parallel, we are still going through the process of selling our old house, and we have now signed the notary contract.
Financially, we did not save any money this month. We had to pay to replace the shower in the old house, and we bought many small things for the new house (some were expected, some not at all). We also organized two birthday parties for our son, exploding our food budget. But we do not expect to save much money this year.
September 2025
Early in the month, we moved into our new house. We hired a company to do the move because we did not want to bother many friends and family members, almost all with children. The move went rather well. It was slightly delayed because the moving company had to go fetch another vehicle to go up our driveway. But everything was done in a day.
We also had the next day to ourselves (our son was having a trip with my family) so we could unpack as much as possible. And of course, there were still many small things to take care of over the next few days and weeks. At least, we could unpack everything and make the house functional in about 3 days, which was the goal.
Changing addresses is such a nightmare in Switzerland. The mail relocation is easy, but then you have to contact so many companies about the address. We even have to use a notary to change the address of the LLC. We have changed the addresses we could think of, but we probably forgot a ton. I really wish there was a smart system for addresses (or that we got rid of snail mail entirely).
At this point, the house is functional, and most rooms are finished. We bought everything to build two wall shelves. But I need time to set them up. My office is not yet finished, and I am waiting until I get more time. We have to do something for the workshop, which is currently boxes everywhere (there is no furniture yet). And the cellar also needs a lot of work. Hopefully, we will get to do some of these projects in October. We have to be
On the selling side of things, we have signed the notary contract. This is a big relief because this makes it clear the house will be sold. The sale will not be finalized until December, so we have a few months to fully empty the house, restore a few things, and clean it thoroughly.
I am looking forward to closing some of the open projects. Currently, there is a bit too much on my mind with so many open loops. But that is to be expected with such a change.
As indicated before, we started going back to the office two days a week. As I expected, it is an awful experience. Everything is worse for me in the office: worse food, worse coffee, a worse desk, worse productivity, and a ton of wasted time and energy.
In September, the removal of the imputed rental value was voted on. This will not change anything until 2028 at least, but at some point, we will not be taxed on the imputed rental value of our house. Since we were planning some renovations, this will mean we will accelerate what is planned for 2026/2027 and then likely stop.
Financially, we had far too many expenses piling up. As a result, we did not save any money. This is not ideal, but also not unexpected.
Expenses
Here are the details of our expenses in September 2025:
| Category | Total | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insurances | 1148 | Expected | Health insurance and legal insurance |
| Transportation | 19 | Less than expected | Only a few bus tickets |
| Personal | 5196 | Much more than expected | Many things for the new house |
| Food | 1996 | Much more than expected | Plenty of groceries, birthday parties |
| Housing | 1797 | Expected | Mortgages for the two houses, heating, and power |
| Taxes | 7757 | Expected | Standard taxes at the three levels |
In total, we spent 17915 CHF. Without taxes, this amounts to 10158 CHF. This is way more than we aim to spend in a month. But we had many expenses for the house and for food.
We organized a birthday party for our son. This year, we even made two parties, one with family and one with friends. The timing was really not great, but we did not want to deprive our son of his birthday party because we were moving. This added some expenses since we invited many people. This exploded our food budget compared to the average.
We also paid about 2000 CHF for replacing the shower in the old house. That is expensive, but I thought it was one renovation worth doing for the old house.
We did not yet have to pay large expenses for the new house. On the other hand, we had many small things to buy:
- A new vacuum cleaner (the old one stays with the old house)
- Wood and paint for two wall shelves
- New batteries for the lawn mower (the lawn is much bigger)
- A new lawn trimmer (the old one died)
- Many new items of toiletries
- A new small rack for weight training and some new weights
- New cables
- And others like this
And all these small things are piling up quickly on our budget. Normally, we should have fewer small expenses piling up next month. But we may have some bigger expenses as well.
2025 Goals
Here is the status of our goals by the end of September 2025:

Overall, several of our goals have taken a hit this month. We have spent so much this month that we have destroyed our spending goal. And we have more to spend next month and the month after. There is no way we will meet this goal. This also lowered our average savings rate, but we may still meet that goal.
After a hectic August, I could get back to doing some workouts in September. I will try to go back to the full routine in October. But I am glad I could get back to it. Since I am now in the office 2 days a week (horrible experience), I chose to go to the gym over lunch. I found a gym next to the office. This will cost me an extra 1000 CHF per year for just two a week, but I consider this to be important for my health.
Our water and power consumption do not mean anything anymore since we moved into a new house. I have not gotten the measure at the old house, so I have taken the same measure as last month. Now I have the measure from the new house, and starting next month, the power and water consumption at the new house.
As for optimizing bills, I do not see anything that can be done this year. We will do a retrospective early next year. We want to optimize the bills for the new house in the future, but we have yet to learn how much it will cost.
Overall, considering the situation, our goals are doing well.
FI Ratio
Here is the progress of our FI ratio as of September 2025:

We recovered some of the lost ground from the last few months.
The main change this month is that we received the advance payment from selling our old house. The buyers sent 10% to the notary. After the signature, the notary used that money to pay the real estate agency and then sent us the remainder. This made a nice increase in our FI net worth since this money is entirely liquid.
The next big change in our net worth will be when we receive the remainder of the money. For us, this will be in December. We will receive the rest of the money (minus the mortgage, of course).
In the next few months, we also expect the bills for the buying to come up. We still have to pay the land register and the notary for buying our new house. We hope to go back to more savings in 2026.
Our expenses will definitely increase with the new house. As a result, our target will also grow significantly. With all these moves, I am starting to have a hard time imagining ever reaching financial independence. Our net worth is growing, but our FI net worth is not moving well anymore.
Overall, since we know our new house is not good for FI, I am relieved to see some progress.
The blog
Overall, very little happened on the blog. I managed to write the usual weekly articles, so I am happy about the progress given the limited time on my hands.
We also have to go through changing the address of the LLC. Since we changed municipalities, we have to go through a notary again to do that. We are using entreprendre.ch services again so that we do not need to go ourselves to the notary. This may not be the most cost-effective option, but at this point, we simply do not have time to do more.
It seems to me that the engagement was really low this month. The blog received many fewer comments than usual. And I also received fewer emails than I am used to.
Once I am done with many of the open projects, I want to get back to some new projects for the blog. But I do not expect this to be in October.
Next Month – October 2025
We are hoping for a quieter month of October 2025. I hope that things will settle down. We have a few projects for the house that we would like to take care of by the end of the year, but no major things. I also would like to finish setting up the office, but that may not happen in October either.
Financially, October 2025 should be rather standard but with higher than average expenses.
What about you? How was September 2025?

Congrats on the move!
And regarding the FI; priorities change over time and if it turns out you won’t go all the way to (early) FI, the savings you made on the way still are valuable.
Not even talking about the value of the tips&tricks here on the blog for others.
All the best for the coming months/years, will continue to follow your journey. :)
Congrats on the move! I was wondering why the row:
Increase Savings Rate by 2.5%
Previous : 44.67%
Target : 49.05%
looks off? 1.025*44.56 = 45.674 so that’s not it, or just adding 2.5% would give 44.67+2.5 = 47.17 so that doesn’t work either. (49.05-44.67)/49.05=0.0893 so it looks like the increase is closer to 9%? Where does this come from?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Good catch! I was using a mix of average savings and total savings rate in this row, so the previous was average savings rate, but the target was total savings rate.
I will fix it for next month and only use the total savings rate, I think.
Big congratulations on your move! I wish you and your family all the best and a wonderful time in your new home:-)
Thanks a lot, Iza!
Buying a house, selling one and move are all big tasks. It’s exhausting. I’m glad to hear that you both managed to get those done smoothly. Congrats again for the purchase, it looks amazing. The kid will have plenty of place to play, you could set up a whole playground for him ;)
Thanks a lot, Yasi!
Those are big tasks indeed. And building a playground is an entirely new task as well :P We will see next year.
When we pass by the region, I’ll bring my boys to the family Baptiste playground 😉
I have not even finished my office; I don’t know about any playground :D
Congratulations on the move! You’ve mentioned the removal of the imputed rental value – would be interesting to read your opinion in the blog about the impact of this on the taxes that the owners will have to pay in the future.
Thanks Victoria.
My article on imputed rental value will pop up next Tuesday.
Congrats on the move!
The Post offers a service for address change where they forward your email for a year and inform different companies. Have a look in case it helps you: https://www.post.ch/en/receiving-mail/relocation/notification-of-move
Thanks, Poor Basler!
Yes, I have used this service. It works great to get everything delivered. However, we have had to do the change manually. So, far, only two companies got the change automatically from the post office. Everything else is done by us.
It’s pretty much mandatory to use this service, I think because there is no way we would not forget an important address.
Congrats on the move, and I sympathise with having a lot of ‘spinning plates’. We are hopefully completing the sale of our UK property soon, and then will start looking for a house here.
Will you do an article soon in the imputed tax vote result?
Interesting about your return to office, and your thoughts. Is there really nothing that’s improved by it?
Hi Will,
Thanks! And good luck on the sale.
Yes, next Tuesday, I will have an article on the imputed rental value :)
No, I have only found negatives after 3 weeks.
Hi Baptiste
Congrats on your new home, I have started to follow your vlogging few weeks ago. Just dropped by to write thank you, your tipps and views are helpful as trading guide.
If you are still looking for options to get a balanced fitness routine (without a fancy equipment or a gym membership), maybe mixing cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises could help. Switzerland is a great spot for Biking, Swimming, Yoga or Trail Running and having enough place at Home maybe you can start some push-ups, squats, burpees.
Take care and enjoy your place!
M
Thanks, mem! I am glad this is useful!
I think my fitness routine is good with a mix of strength training and cardio training. My only current problem is that I cannot do anything when I have to go the office, hence a gym again.
Congratulations on the new home !
I also just got a place, and as you say it is not good for FI. But hey it’s about choosing the expenditures carefully, not about not spending at all.
I wanted to help you in some way as you’ve helped me so much through the blog. If you are looking for a way to decrease your gym bill to zero, I have some fitness-related resources I’d love to share with you ( I am a certified trainer )
Take care
Thanks, Carlo!
Good point, it’s about choosing where we want to spend, not to not spend at all.
My gym bill used to be zero. The problem is when I go to the office, I have no time during the day to do my gym. So, I need a place to work out. If I ever stop going to the office, I will be back to zero fees in gym.
But if you have any good gym tips, I’d be glad to hear them.
Congratulations Baptiste on the move. I wish you every happiness with your family and loved ones in your new home.
Thanks, Dror! Wishing you all the best too!
