Broker Comparison Tool

(Disclosure: Some of the links below may be affiliate links)

Compare the fees of different brokers under different investing scenarios.

Invest each month for a year
Sell each month for a year
Invest each month for multiple years then sell all at once
Invest monthly for multiple years then sell monthly for your retirement

How does this work?

You can choose between four different scenarios:

  1. Invest. This calculator assumes that you are investing once a month into your ETFs. By default, you will invest in each of your two ETFs according to your allocation. If you use 100 or 0 as a world allocation, you will only invest in one ETF each month.
  2. Sell. This is very similar to the Invest scenario, except that we sell each month instead of buying.
  3. Invest for a goal. This scenario assumes you are saving for a specific goal and that you will sell everything you have accumulated after a specified number of hours. This could be used if you are investing to save for a house, for instance.
  4. Invest for retirement. This is the most advanced of the scenarios. In this case, you are investing for multiple years (like the previous scenario), but you are then withdrawing (selling) from your portfolio every month for multiple years as well.

The total fees include everything that can differentiate brokers:

    1. Custody fees.
  1. Foreign currency exchange fees.
  2. Transaction costs for the stock market.
  3. Stamp duty if the broker is Swiss.
  4. The US taxes on dividends if the broker does not allow you to invest in US ETFs.

The total fees are computed for an entire year.

Is something missing?

If you would like another broker included in this calculator, please let me know in the comments below. And if you want to be able to do more configuration, also let me know, and I will consider extra features.

What about Robo-advisors?

  1. I have an introduction broker meintrade.ch and I would appreciate to see those (Lynx, meintrade.ch and others) also compared with the original IBKR.
Thank you for your work! much appreciated

    1. Thanks for the suggestion, Christoph. I have taken note of adding at least meintrade.ch to the comparison tool. I will check it out since I have never heard of it before.

  2. Hi Baptiste,
I’m British and no longer in Switzerland but still holding on to my CHF’s. I’m wondering why Interactive Investor is not on your comparison list?

    1. Hi Lakshman

I had never heard of this service before. Looking into their FAQ, they are not open to Swiss investors.

  3. I only recently came across this site and tried out the Broker Comparator – Invest for a goal for fun. I was amazed at the price ranges I could see, as I am a client of several institutions myself.
After doing some maths and comparing them with the Comparator values, I noticed huge differences, even though I calculated with the current fees.
It would be helpful to know what your solution looks like and what fees you charge.

    1. Hi Thom

If you find some discrepancies, let me know the details (all inputs) and your own math and I’d be glad to take a look. If you have a lot of feedback, you can use the forum for that to discuss.
