September 2018 – Car repair and plane tickets

Categories Monthly, Blogging

After poor financial results in August 2018, it is time to review September 2018. Even though we had some big expenses this month, the results are better. We were able to save more money this month. It is still not perfect, but it is very slowly getting there.

Not a lot of things happened in September 2018. I spent about ten days in the United States for my company. This was not expensive since everything was paid by my company. I did some shopping though. However, we bought plane tickets to China for the next Chinese new year. And we had to pay the repair for the car accident of Mrs. The Poor Swiss. This made a very large dent into our budget.

July 2018 – Getting back up to speed

Categories Monthly, Blogging, Side Hustle

After a disappointing June 2018 month, we managed to get back up to speed in July 2018. We had some strong savings this month. Nothing extraordinary, but pretty good still. We were able to increase our net worth significantly.

Since today is Swiss national day, Happy National Day to all my Swiss readers.

We went to Orléans one week this month. I also spent one week in the army. It was my last five days to serve in the army! Other than that, nothing special happened. It was a good month overall. Let’s go into the details now :)

How to Transfer a WordPress Blog from Bluehost to SiteGround

Categories Blogging

After all the problems I had with Bluehost, I decided to migrate my blog from Bluehost to SiteGround. This is not a very difficult process but there are many steps. It is helpful to do it following a guide. This guide will help you follow all the steps of the process and not make mistakes.

I still had some months of hosting at Bluehost. But I do not want to have anything with them anymore. I am sure they capable of messing up again during that time. Thus, I decided to do the transfer as soon as possible. As you read this post now, the website is now hosted at SiteGround.

It took me a bit longer than I thought for the transfer. And I did not have as much time as I needed. So I am a bit late on my blogging schedule. In this post, I am going to show how I did the transfer to SiteGround. I hope this will help realize that it is quite easy to do the transfer. And I hope I can convince you that Bluehost is not a good host.

Why I Will Never Recommend Bluehost Again!

Categories Blogging

As you may have seen, my blog was pretty much not working between last Thursday and Saturday. I had many issues with Bluehost and it took them an unreasonable amount of time to fix the issue. I already had issues before and this last one was a really bad outage. So, I decided I will never trust them again. Since I do not trust them as hosting provider, I am not going to recommend them anymore.

I have only started using Bluehost a few months ago. But I have had several issues in these months. And these last issues with the website being down for more than a day. They are really doing a bad job… I plan to migrate to another hosting provider soon. In this post, you will find the story behind this!

I am going to start with a question: How many Bluehost support guys do you need to fix an SSL certificate? You will find the answer below ;)

May 2018 – Wedding and 100K net worth milestone

Categories Monthly, Blogging, Investing

A lot of things happened in May 2018! The most important event of this month is of course that we got married! We had a nice and simple wedding with close family and friends.

And as you will see, we have reached the 100K CHF milestone in our net worth! This is the first time :) We can now hope that we will stay at this level for some time!

Even considering the wedding expenses, this month has some good savings rate. This is mostly due to the extensive gifts we received. This month is the month with my largest income yet. We should have been able to turn it down. Let’s hope we can keep expenses to a low next month.

The Poor Swiss blog

Categories Blogging

Welcome to The Poor Swiss blog :)

If you arrived here through The Blog Archives, you have now reached the very first post from The Poor Swiss blog. On the other hand, if you are just starting reading through my posts, you can take a look at my Introduction for New Readers.

This is the first post on the blog The Poor Swiss. On this blog, I talk about many subjects:

  • Financial Independence: Learn how to become free with your money!
  • Investing: How to invest your money to get more income.
  • Budget: How to account for your expenses and earnings and track your performance.
  • Frugality: How to save money on your expenses.
  • And many more subjects!

The year I created this blog, in 2017, my savings were getting worse and worse every month. This was due to many big expenses such as plane tickets and unexpected health care. But this made me realize that I am not saving enough at all. Although I have a good salary and live quite well, I have a tendency to spend too much.

In 2016, my savings rate was around 18%. This is not really bad. But still lower than I would have liked. But in 2017, my savings rate is down to around 7%. This is way too low and made me realize that my expenses are way too high. Moreover, the last two months have been negative months although not by a long shot. This month is also likely to end up being negative. Given my salary, I should easily be able to save at least 25% of my income each month.

Since this point, I started reading many personal finance blogs and websites. I have learned a lot of things about investments and spending. In the coming months, I plan to put these lessons to work. My main change now will be to reduce my spending. I will then continue to learn about investments and I will try to put my money to work. For now, I did not start investing at all. But I plan to fix this. I believe it is important to start improving the budget first before starting to focus on investment.

For some context, I am a 31 years old software programmer. I just finished my Ph.D. in Computer Science and I am still working in my school. I live in a small village in the countryside area of the Fribourg state, in Switzerland. Currently, I plan to stay in that area for many years. But I am hoping to find a better job next year once my contract with my school is finished.

My main goal with this blog is to motivate myself to improve my finances. But I am also going to write personal finance tips and in-depth analysis of some important investing topics. I am hoping that you will learn from my mistakes and improve your finances with me :)

And do not forget that I am not very good with my money, so do not follow everything I do. But you may try to learn from my mistakes. I am not a financial advisor. You should only take financial decisions after having consulted many points of view on the subject.
