Categories Blogging, Monthly, Side Hustle12 Comments on July 2018 – Getting back up to speed

After a disappointing June 2018 month, we managed to get back up to speed in July 2018. We had some strong savings this month. Nothing extraordinary, but pretty good still. We were able to increase our net worth significantly.

Since today is Swiss national day, Happy National Day to all my Swiss readers.

We went to Orléans one week this month. I also spent one week in the army. It was my last five days to serve in the army! Other than that, nothing special happened. It was a good month overall. Let’s go into the details now :)

Categories BloggingLeave a comment on How to Transfer a WordPress Blog from Bluehost to SiteGround

After all the problems I had with Bluehost, I decided to migrate my blog from Bluehost to SiteGround. This is not a very difficult process but there are many steps. It is helpful to do it following a guide. This guide will help you follow all the steps of the process and not make mistakes.

I still had some months of hosting at Bluehost. But I do not want to have anything with them anymore. I am sure they capable of messing up again during that time. Thus, I decided to do the transfer as soon as possible. As you read this post now, the website is now hosted at SiteGround.

It took me a bit longer than I thought for the transfer. And I did not have as much time as I needed. So I am a bit late on my blogging schedule. In this post, I am going to show how I did the transfer to SiteGround. I hope this will help realize that it is quite easy to do the transfer. And I hope I can convince you that Bluehost is not a good host.

Why I Will Never Recommend Bluehost Again!

Categories Blogging24 Comments on Why I Will Never Recommend Bluehost Again!

As you may have seen, my blog was pretty much not working between last Thursday and Saturday. I had many issues with Bluehost and it took them an unreasonable amount of time to fix the issue. I already had issues before and this last one was a really bad outage. So, I decided I will never trust them again. Since I do not trust them as hosting provider, I am not going to recommend them anymore.

I have only started using Bluehost a few months ago. But I have had several issues in these months. And these last issues with the website being down for more than a day. They are really doing a bad job… I plan to migrate to another hosting provider soon. In this post, you will find the story behind this!

I am going to start with a question: How many Bluehost support guys do you need to fix an SSL certificate? You will find the answer below ;)

May 2018 – Wedding and 100K net worth milestone

Categories Blogging, Investing, Monthly5 Comments on May 2018 – Wedding and 100K net worth milestone

A lot of things happened in May 2018! The most important event of this month is of course that we got married! We had a nice and simple wedding with close family and friends.

And as you will see, we have reached the 100K CHF milestone in our net worth! This is the first time :) We can now hope that we will stay at this level for some time!

Even considering the wedding expenses, this month has some good savings rate. This is mostly due to the extensive gifts we received. This month is the month with my largest income yet. We should have been able to turn it down. Let’s hope we can keep expenses to a low next month.

I Redesigned the Blog for Pinterest

Categories Blogging6 Comments on I Redesigned the Blog for Pinterest

You may have noticed that I did some changes to the design of the blog. There is now more room for the content itself. And the content is the most important part there is, right? I also created a Pinterest account and added nice images to all the posts! From now on, I am going to share every post on Pinterest. I did not know this sharing network before. But it seems it is all the hyper right now.

I hope these new changes will improve the experience of my readers on this blog. If you have any more suggestion on improvements, please let me know :)

Lessons Learned after 6 Months of Blogging

Categories Blogging24 Comments on Lessons Learned after 6 Months of Blogging

I just realized that this blog has been already been alive for more than six months already! Happy blogging anniversary The Poor Swiss!

The first post on this blog is from October 10. At that point, I hosted it directly on wordpress.com. It has only been self-hosted since March 2 with bluehost.

I started blogging here to motivate me to save more each month. In the beginning, my finances were in really bad shape. I had to reduce a lot my expenses and I was also lucky to increase my income. Since the beginning, my savings rate have increased. March 2018 was my best month with more than 46% savings rate! I am starting to get more confident about my finances. Of course, it is still not perfect, but it is better. I want to improve them progressively over time. I do not think there is a perfect budget. One can always improve his budget.

I made the Blog Faster and More Secure!

Categories Blogging5 Comments on I made the Blog Faster and More Secure!

These days, I have made many updates on the blog. Since the migration to self-hosted WordPress, I have improved the performance of the website, fixed the HTTPS version of the site and cleaned up my WordPress plugins. I am hoping that this will improve the experience of the readers of the blog.

In this post, I am going to describe the changes I have done recently. The goal is to improve the performance of the website as well as the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of the website. This will be a blogging and hosting post, nothing really related to finance here :)

How to Migrate a Blog from wordpress.com to BlueHost

Categories BloggingLeave a comment on How to Migrate a Blog from wordpress.com to BlueHost

Update: I have migrated away from bluehost to SiteGround. I do not recommend you to use bluehost anymore. You can read the reasons why I do not recommend bluehost anymore.

I took some time today to migrate the site out of wordpress.com to bluehost. The free hosting at wordpress.com is not bad, but miss the full capabilities of full WordPress. Now, I can install all the plugins I want, do any custom change and improve the site to be exactly what I want. This is only possible with self-hosted WordPress. I also wanted a real domain for visibility reasons :) Another advantage of a self-hosted is that it will greatly improve your  Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

The new URL of this website is now: https://thepoorswiss.com/

The Poor Swiss blog

Categories Blogging4 Comments on The Poor Swiss blog

Welcome to The Poor Swiss blog :)

If you arrived here through The Blog Archives, you have now reached the very first post from The Poor Swiss blog. On the other hand, if you are just starting reading through my posts, you can take a look at my Introduction for New Readers.

This is the first post on the blog The Poor Swiss. On this blog, I talk about many subjects:

  • Financial Independence: Learn how to become free with your money!
  • Investing: How to invest your money to get more income.
  • Budget: How to account for your expenses and earnings and track your performance.
  • Frugality: How to save money on your expenses.
  • And many more subjects!

The year I created this blog, in 2017, my savings were getting worse and worse every month. This was due to many big expenses such as plane tickets and unexpected health care. But this made me realize that I am not saving enough at all. Although I have a good salary and live quite well, I have a tendency to spend too much.

In 2016, my savings rate was around 18%. This is not really bad. But still lower than I would have liked. But in 2017, my savings rate is down to around 7%. This is way too low and made me realize that my expenses are way too high. Moreover, the last two months have been negative months although not by a long shot. This month is also likely to end up being negative. Given my salary, I should easily be able to save at least 25% of my income each month.

Since this point, I started reading many personal finance blogs and websites. I have learned a lot of things about investments and spending. In the coming months, I plan to put these lessons to work. My main change now will be to reduce my spending. I will then continue to learn about investments and I will try to put my money to work. For now, I did not start investing at all. But I plan to fix this. I believe it is important to start improving the budget first before starting to focus on investment.

For some context, I am a 31 years old software programmer. I just finished my Ph.D. in Computer Science and I am still working in my school. I live in a small village in the countryside area of the Fribourg state, in Switzerland. Currently, I plan to stay in that area for many years. But I am hoping to find a better job next year once my contract with my school is finished.

My main goal with this blog is to motivate myself to improve my finances. But I am also going to write personal finance tips and in-depth analysis of some important investing topics. I am hoping that you will learn from my mistakes and improve your finances with me :)

And do not forget that I am not very good with my money, so do not follow everything I do. But you may try to learn from my mistakes. I am not a financial advisor. You should only take financial decisions after having consulted many points of view on the subject.
